What's Up, Doc?

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24-25, NKJV)

My all-time favorite cartoon character is Bugs Bunny.  That "wascally wabbit" was a no-nonsense, jovial, wise-cracking mammal who made the best out of even the most precarious situation in ways that always brought a smile to my face.  Why can't I be more like Bugs?

Right now my family is going through a tough time as the result of an unfortunate series of events.  We didn't choose them but God has allowed them. I know that.  I know that God is in control and yet I still find myself asking, "What's up, God?"  I feel like the enemy is hot on our heels, much like the Coyote in pursuit of RoadRunner, but there is no Acme Instant Job or winning lottery ticket to bail us out.  More than laughter and good luck, which carried Bugs Bunny through the worst of times, our problems are going to require much faith in a God that is bigger than the struggles we face.  Faith we cannot see or feel, but faith to trust in the God who sees everything.  Faith to remember his faithfulness in the past and his promise to provide for us one day at a time.

What is the struggle you are facing today?  Rather than dive into a rabbit hole to escape your dilemma, are you prepared to stand and face your giant knowing that a sling and a stone in your hand trumps the most sophisticated weapon in your enemy's arsenal?  Can you accept the fact that God has allowed your circumstances, that he is not ever caught off-guard by anything that happens to you, and that he has a good plan and purpose for you (Jeremiah 29:11) even if you cannot see it with your earthly eyes?

If your faith seems a little shaky, don't condemn yourself for a lack of faith.  Rather, pray and ask God for more faith and more of him.

Jitterbug Coffee House -- a frazzled writer's paradise!

Writers and chaos don't mix.  Since it's summer and my entire household has been underfoot lately,  I decided that my only hope of surviving with my sanity intact and meeting the publisher's deadline was to take a writer's retreat and head for the peace and quiet of my mom's cabin in the woods near Heber Springs.   What a great idea this was!

Unfortunately, Mom's internet connection is a little behind the times and certainly inadequate to do business and email anything remotely the size of the manuscript I needed to send this morning.  But not to worry, Jitterbug Coffee House  on Main Street in beautiful downtown Heber Springs has provided me not only the ideal working environment but also the best coffee in the county.

You know, I could get used to this!  A portable computer, a couple of dollars in my pocket, and the peace and quiet of a charming coffee cafe in a small town have been a refreshing change of pace from the noise of Starbucks and the constant activity in my household.

Thanks to the fine folks at Jitterbug for their gracious hospitality and delicious coffee! Next time you pass through Heber Springs on your way to Greers Ferry Lake, make sure to stop in and give them your business and tell 'em Dee Dee sent you!

When You Think You Can't You Probably Should

Give, and it shall be given to you.  A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. (Luke 6:38, NIV)

If you are like me then you probably receive a lot of solicitations in the mail from organizations that want you to donate to their cause.  Recently, as my hand was moving one such request from the desk to my waste paper basket because I felt I couldn't afford to give, I realized that I probably couldn't afford not to give.

Like a lot of other folks, our funds are stretched to capacity just to cover our living expenses.  We are afraid that if we give of our resources to others -- whether those resources be gifts of money, time, or talent -- we won't have what we need at the end of the day.  We deprive ourselves of the joy of giving when one of the things we need most in life is joy!  The Bible tells us "it is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35) and that "God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7).

If you feel God tugging at your heart to make a financial contribution to a charity which serves those less fortunate than you or to give of your time by picking up the phone to call a lonely or hurting friend, don't delay!  Don't think that you cannot afford to because you might not be able to pay a credit card bill or finish your work by its deadline.  We can all do a little something to make our world a better place to live.

If you sow into the lives of others you will reap rich rewards, perhaps when you need them the most!

The Faithfulness of God

Do you know that God is faithful?  I could write a book about his faithfulness because it is something I have seen demonstrated over and over in the lives of others and have experienced personally myself.

When my husband was laid off from his full time job at a local bank, I immediately thought back to the two times this has happened before in our twenty-five year marriage.  We immediately launched into crisis mode, but not from a standpoint of fear.  Instead, we prayed together, thanking God for his faithfulness during past times of job loss and financial challenge, had a family meeting to inform our children of the change and assure them of God's provision, then began informing our friends and family so they could begin praying us through this season of unemployment.  We did not crumble in fear because we know that "perfect love drives out fear" (1 John 4:18).  God has not given us a spirit of fear but rather a spirit of love, of power, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

How can we cheerfully face the uncertainty resulting from this unexpected change with a pile of bills, four mouths to feed, vet and medical expenses, and other financial obligations screaming for our attention?  Because of our relationship with God and the promises of his Word.  We know that:

  • Our God shall supply all our needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19)
  • God works all things together for the good of those who love him and all called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28)
  • The righteous are never forsaken nor do their children beg bread (which is good because we love to eat!) (Psalm 37:25)
  • The LORD has a plan for us, a plan to prosper and not harm us, to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11)
  • God will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5)
There are SO many more promises in God's Word for us and for you who are going through trials of your own.  Delight yourself in God, stand upon the promises of his Word, and know that he's got everything under control!

We covet and thank you for your prayers as we journey through this season of seeking God's will.  Even as we thank our God, we look forward to sharing our testimony of his grace, provision, and favor!

Blessings galore!

A Fond Farewell

Beloved BD Spacemaker, age 11, died from overuse on June 11, 2012.  Left to suffer caffeine withdrawal are Dee Dee Wike and her husband, Steve, who was devoted to nightly preparing BD for the morning brew by grinding beans and filling the tank with filtered water.  BD will be greatly missed by those who enjoyed his coffee all these years.

A Day without Coffee

Minute Maid's famous slogan, "A day without orange juice is like a day without sunshine," skillfully employed the power of suggestion to create a thirst for nature's healthy morning beverage.  Millions of Americans, including me, took that slogan to heart by buying orange juice by the gallons.  As much as orange juice is a part of the morning breakfast menu for many, coffee has become my favorite morning and afternoon pick-me-up.  A day without coffee is a day without sanity, in my case!

This afternoon my beloved under-the-counter coffee maker failed me after eleven years of faithful service.  But I am not giving up on my trusted friend.  I am hoping that an overdue vinegar cleansing will perk up my favorite appliance so that I can face the world with a smile and a cup of fresh-brewed coffee in the morning.

Lord, it's the simple things in life that often give us the greatest pleasure -- a cup of coffee to start our day, the refreshment of an afternoon thunderstorm to quench the thirst of parched lawns and flowers, and a good book to pass the time and stimulate our imagination.  Thank you for all your good gifts and for caring about all that concerns your children.  Thank you for friends who give us cappuccino makers so we can enjoy our coffee on a rainy day, even when the coffee maker takes the day off!

Flora, Fauna, and Fajitas

Nothing does me good like packing a suitcase, taking my favorite traveling buddy (Joy), and running away from home, especially when the escape is to Big-O's house.  (My mom's grandchildren call her Big-O.)  Mom lives in a secluded wooded retreat near Greers Ferry Lake, the perfect place to decompress from the stress of our daily routine and rest up for the busy summer ahead.

This trip was all about flora, fauna, and fajitas, thanks to a new Mexican restaurant in Heber Springs.  We ate at Las Playitas two of the four evenings we were there and found the food to be muy delicioso!

One of the things I most look forward to is sitting outside on Mom's porch watching birds and looking for signs of other wildlife such as deer.  This trip certainly did not disappoint!  I had the privilege of rescuing a baby rabbit, which my sister's Schnauzer delivered as a  gift the first morning of our visit.  Although Bugs was injured and stunned, after about thirty six hours of rest and care he bounced back and was ready for release back into the forest, though we hated to let him go.

While watching an adult rabbit hop around in Mom's front yard, I looked across the road and noticed two ears sticking up in the tall grass just beyond where the rabbit was grazing.  A look through her binoculars revealed a tiny speckled fawn curled up in the grass with no parent nearby.  After watching the precious baby for several minutes, I ventured across the road to see if it, like the rabbit we had rescued, was injured and to snap a quick photo.  As I approached the fawn, it lay still.  When I got to within about five or six feet, I slowly raised my camera while talking quietly to it.  Before I could snap a closeup, it quickly got up and took off like a rocket, leaving only a second to snap a shot of it in flight.  The next afternoon as we drove through the subdivision, we saw the fawn with its mother crossing the road.

While we were there, I also had close encounters with a stunned chickadee, a lazy turtle, and a curious and spry lizard.

Eating fajitas and photographing the fauna were not the only activities I enjoyed while at Mom's.  I also took advantage of the beautiful weather and my love for gardening to plant some nandinas and a butterfly bush that had been in their pots for far too long.  Digging the holes was no easy task as the soil where she lives is very rocky.  But the joy of the accomplishment made every sore muscle worth it!

Did You Miss Me?

Last week I decided to take some time off from writing and technology to celebrate my son's graduation from high school and reconnect with my children following the end of their school year.  While I enjoyed the time with my family, I missed sharing little snippets of my life and God's lessons with you.  I'll have to admit -- I did cheat a little by checking my Facebook to see what my friends were up to, but I didn't linger there.

Did you know that God often wonders if we miss him?  When you skip your daily quiet time with him or wander from the path he has ordained for you, he truly misses you!

Sometimes we turn our backs on God without meaning to.  Sometimes we do it deliberately because we think we know better and can handle our lives just fine without him.  Whatever the case may be, he loves and misses us when we aren't actively seeking a more intimate relationship with him.  Because of his great love for us, God will always pursue us but he will never push his way into our hearts.  God has already chosen us, but it is up to us to invite him into our lives.  When we do, he blesses us with joy and peace and a love like no other.

Thank you for stopping by my blog to say hello today.  God and I are always eager to share the encouragement of his Word with others.  If you haven't spent time with God lately, find a quiet place today to reconnect with him.  He has missed you and is waiting for you with open arms.
