Let Freedom Ring

On this Independence Day many Americans are pondering freedom and the things that have made our country the envy of nations around the world.  Others are lamenting the changes that continue to erode our freedom, which was bought by the blood of generations of willing men and women who have laid down their lives to secure it.  America has changed into something we barely recognize, a land that has lost its way and is in danger of losing God's blessing.  What in the world has happened to us, and who is to blame for what we have become?

We are quick to blame corrupt politicians, Supreme Court rulings, corporate greed, and moral decline for America's problems. We have lost hope that we will ever be able to change all "they" have done to destroy the America we once knew.  But we fail to see that at the root of it all is sin-- sin living in each of us.  America will never change if we, as individuals, don't recognize our own sin and cry out to the only One who can save us from it.

Jesus called himself "the Way, the Truth, and the Life" (John 14:6). He said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). The problem is, we have stopped following his teachings and have instead embraced the lies of the ones who are determined to destroy the America our founding fathers established.

The apostle Paul wrote, "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). If America is ever to see true greatness again then we,  as individuals, need to recognize and repent of our own sins.  True freedom will only come as our hearts are changed and we begin holding to the teachings on which this country was founded.

Like many of my countrymen I will celebrate America's 4th of July by proudly flying my flag, joining family and friends for a festive meal, and watching fireworks while listening to patriotic music.  I will give thanks for those who continue to fight so hard for our freedom and pray for those bent on destroying it.  But most importantly I will rejoice in having discovered true freedom through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ -- freedom that was bought by his precious blood, a freedom that no Supreme Court ruling or religious extremist can take from me.
