The Tablet

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a geek at heart.  Having spent the last fourteen months working as a real estate software support specialist, I have acquired a greater appreciation of technology and been exposed to new gadgets and gizmos which make doing business a little more convenient and a whole lot more fun!  Recently I upgraded my smartphone to one that not only keeps me connected with family, friends, and clients, but which also allows me to have my quiet time anywhere I go, without having to lug around my Bible and the assortment of devotional books I use each day.  It hasn't taken long for me to decide that a tablet is a must-have for this author/speaker wannabe.

I am not sure why owning a tablet has become such an obsession for me.  Perhaps it is because I have seen how much I can do with a smartphone and want to take my productivity to the next level with a tablet.  Or maybe I think that having something as portable and handy as a tablet will make it easier and more convenient to read and study in preparation for writing and speaking engagements.  Whatever the reason, for me this has become the year of the tablet.

While some of us may be preoccupied with our new iPhones, iPads, and Android tablets, God is interested in a different kind of tablet.  In 2 Corinthians 3:3, Paul writes, "You show that you are a letter from Christ, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone, but on tablets of human hearts."  In Ezekiel 36:26, the Lord says, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh."

As we all enjoy our new tablets, iPads, and smartphones, let us pray that God will write His letter of love on the tablets of our hearts.  Let us resolve not to become so enamored with our new tech toys that our hearts grow stony and cold toward the people in our lives who matter most.  Make it a practice to "unplug" every once in awhile and spend time with those you love -- you won't need an app for that!
